Wal-Mart recognizes domestic partners

The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer disclosed the statement in an SEC filing Wednesday.

The expanded definition, included in the “Conflicts of Interest” and “Relations with Suppliers” sections of the ethics code, specifically bars employees from using any confidential information for the benefit of immediate family members and from approaching a supplier about providing employment for immediate family members.

According to Wal-Mart’s (Research) ethics code, “Immediate family members include (whether by birth, adoption, marriage or Domestic Partnership or Civil Union, if recognized by your state or other local law) your spouse, children, parents, siblings, mothers- and fathers-in-law, sons- and daughters-in-law and brothers- and sisters-in-law.”

The policy revision will apply to “same sex marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships in geographical areas that where those relationships are officially recognized,” Dan Fogelman, spokesperson for Wal-Mart, told CNN/Money.

Gay- and lesbian-rights groups praised Wal-Mart, the country’s largest private employer, for expanding its definition of “immediate family,” according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Strategic management of the family law practice.

This article discusses the fundamental concepts of strategic management and illustrates how they may be successfully applied to the family law practice. Many family lawyers, myself included, did not go to business school as undergraduates. Perhaps we should have. After entering the practice of law, we were told that law is a "profession," not a business, and that our profession and practice would suffer if we approached our practice from a business perspective. This perspective was understandable in the era (pre-1970s) when the demand for legal services exceeded the supply of lawyers. Ironically, in today's legal economy, where too many

The public be damned! better describes the action that the Suffolk County executive, Steve Levy, and his special labor-management committee took in bypassing the Legislature and extending health benefits to domestic partners (read nonmarital sexual partners) of county employees (''Equal Coverage in Suffolk,'' editorial, Aug. 1). Already defeated in principle twice in the Legislature, this action conferring benefits on the homosexual partners and on the nonmarital heterosexual partners of county employees creates a substitute for marriage and at the same time discriminates and excludes by favoring only partnerships based on a criterion of illicit sexual relationships. Domestic partners line up for rights

After spending this weekend relaxing in Olympia, Laura Mansfield and Marilyn Guthrie plan to walk from their bed-and-breakfast to an office of the Secretary of State on Monday morning and file a notarized form. The simple document will allow the Seattle couple to be among the first in Washington to register as domestic partners, granting them certain benefits and, they hope, drawing them closer to legal gay marriage. "It's one step toward helping people recognize us as a married couple," Mansfield said Friday. "That's our goal." More : seattlepi.nwsource.co

Domestic Partner Benefits

Health insurance plans are ever-evolving employee benefits where innovation is continually being tested and definitions redefined. A concept in employee coverage currently gaining notoriety is Domestic Partner Benefits. Providing health coverage for a domestic partner is becoming increasingly important to small companies and large corporations alike. It's a valuable incentive to help recruit and retain talent in a thriving workforce where premium benefits are in high demand. Domestic partner coverage would give the same corporate insurance benefits currently offered to an employee's spouse to an individual who is in a committed relationship with an employee.
